Highlands Trout is located high in the Maluti Mountains of Lesotho (± 2,200m), Katse Dam offers an environment uniquely suited to the scale production of large Trout in Africa.

Driven by exports to the Asian markets the project aims to deliver a premium quality product at globally competitive price.

6 years of project planning, biological and environmental studies have culminated in Highlands Trout receiving a license to practice aquaculture in Katse Dam in June 2011.

Stocking has commenced with the first generation of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) aiming for a first harvest of 500T in late 2012.

It is projected that Highlands Trout will establish a production capacity exceeding 3,000 t.p.a through a series of annual expansion increments.

Careful monitoring of water quality parameters in conjunction with local authorities will ensure the environmental integrity of the dam is maintained through sustainable production levels.

Advance Africa, as project managers for Highlands Trout have developed a new trout farming business in Katse Dam, Lesotho. Advance Africa’s role included the development of the financial model, the business plan, securing of investment, project managment of the pre-development phase including the EIA and construction phase and are also involved in the general management of Highlands Trout.
